Barbara Holness's Guide to Natural Dog Food

Barbara Holness

Barbara has kept Springer Spaniels for many years and changed to feeding a homemade natural raw food diet after becoming concerned about what ingredients were actually being put into commercial dog foods. She decided that the only way to be sure what her dogs were eating was to prepare it herself. She spent a long time researching the subject and eventually decided upon the diet she now uses.

We all know that, in order to stay healthy ourselves, we should eat a wholesome, varied, natural diet. Processed junk food is bad for us and can lead to obesity and medical problems. Dogs are no different. The adage “You are what you eat” is just as relevant for your canine friend as it is for us humans.

Just like us, a dog’s behaviour, happiness, health, longevity and overall well-being are inextricably linked with what you feed him. A diet insufficient to meet his nutritional needs can lead to an inability of the immune system to ward off and cope with disease.

The state of our pets’ health has been deteriorating for the past 20 years and it is now estimated that some 90% of disease in animals is linked to poor nutrition, with more immune system disorders, genetic disorders and deadly chronic diseases than ever before.

A natural, raw diet provides a range of benefits, including:

  • Reduced doggy odour and ‘dog breath’
  • Naturally clean teeth (no need for toothbrushes or descaling) helping to prevent gum disease and leading to improved general health.
  • A nice, shiny coat.
  • Firmer, more ‘pick-upable’, smaller stools.
  • Can reduce vet bills (healthier dogs)
  • Puppies develop at a more appropriate rate. Quick growth spurts are avoided.
  • Better weight control, which helps to reduce the symptoms of arthritis and obesity.
  • Some long standing bowel problems (e.g. constant or recurrent diarrhoea) and skin problems (chewing feet, recurrent ear infections or constant scratching) can be cured.
